Clean out the toy box for Linden Community Policing Forum this Mandela Day

Residents are encouraged to donate clean, working toys to help young children learn, grow, and play this Mandela Day.

A forgotten toy tucked away in a cupboard could become one of the most meaningful gifts a child could receive this Mandela Day.

The Linden Community Policing Forum (CPF) is calling on residents to donate clean, unbroken toys to help stock early childhood development (ECD) centres, as well as the paediatric department at Rahima Moosa Mother and Child Hospital (RMMCH).

Chairperson Annelize Tichauer said the initiative was inspired by the understanding that, while toys are often considered a luxury, they play a vital role in a child’s development. “Children have a right to play. With the rising cost of living, toys are often the last item that ECD centres can afford, yet they are essential for children’s cognitive, emotional, and motor development.”

The CPF is particularly appealing for educational and cause-and-effect toys that light up, make sounds, or respond to touch, as these are used by therapists working with young patients at RMMCH. However, toys of all kinds are welcome, provided they are clean, complete, and in good working order. “A toy can spark curiosity and help a child learn through play. In a hospital environment, even a soft toy can provide comfort to a child facing a difficult journey.”

The goal is to collect at least 670 toys before July 17. Donations can be dropped off 24 hours a day at Linden Police Station. The community has repeatedly supported initiatives such as book drives, sandwich campaigns, and crèche fun days, and the CPF hopes residents will once again rally behind a cause that reflects the true spirit of Mandela Day.
Tichauer encouraged people to find any way to honour Nelson Mandela’s memory by spreading love, joy, and kindness. No gesture is too small.
