UJ golf day drives hope as players tee off for students needing financial support
Professionals swapped pens for golf clubs to raise funds to help students access higher education.
Golf clubs replaced office desks as University of Johannesburg staff, alumni, corporate partners and community leaders gathered at Randpark Golf Club’s Course for the university’s annual golf day, all with one goal — raising funds for financially disadvantaged students on July 16.

Among those taking part was UJ Registrar Professor Bettine Jansen van Vuuren, who joined a four-ball made up of colleagues after attending last year’s event as a spectator.

Although the fundraiser provided plenty of laughs and friendly rivalry, Jansen van Vuuren said the day’s true purpose extended far beyond the scorecards. “It’s fantastic being out here with colleagues, hitting some good shots and some not-so-good shots, but what makes today special is remembering why we’re here. We’re here for our students.”

She praised the collective effort behind the event, highlighting the support from sponsors, university staff and organisers who helped make the day possible. Hosted at one of South Africa’s premier championship golf courses, the annual fundraiser brings together the university community and corporate partners to help bridge the financial gap faced by students pursuing higher education.

Every four-ball entered and every sponsorship secured contribute towards allowing financially disadvantaged students to continue their studies at UJ.
