The Johannesburg Flying Squad arrested six suspects aged between 25 and 36 during operations conducted between July 17 and 20, recovering three stolen or hijacked vehicles, seizing suspected drugs, and arresting a suspect for malicious damage to property and intimidation.

According to a statement shared by Johannesburg Flying Squad media liaison, Raymond Sambo, the operation began on July 17 when officers patrolling the corner of Crouse Road and Ninth Avenue in Vrededorp stopped and searched a suspect. “Police recovered five mandrax tablets with an estimated street value of R250. The suspect was arrested for possession of drugs and detained at Brixton SAPS.

On July 18, officers acting on information about a stolen motorbike proceeded to 12th Avenue in Alexandra, where they arrested a suspect found in possession of a stripped black Hero motorcycle that had been hijacked in Cosmo City. “The motorbike was recovered and booked into the police pound for safekeeping and further investigation.”

Later that afternoon, Flying Squad members patrolling High Street in Brixton arrested another suspect after allegedly finding four packets containing crystal methamphetamine and dagga with an estimated street value of R300.

Police also responded to a complaint of malicious damage to property at Main Road and Third Avenue, Melville, where a male suspect was arrested on charges of malicious damage to property and intimidation before being detained at Brixton SAPS.

At about 17:35, officers patrolling the corner of Maud and Fifth streets in Florida arrested another suspect after allegedly recovering one packet of crystal meth valued at about R200.

The operation also led to the recovery of several stolen or hijacked vehicles. Officers recovered a white Toyota Rumion in Alexandra after following up on information about a hijacked vehicle. The vehicle was booked into the police pound for further investigation.

In the early hours of July 19, Flying Squad members recovered an abandoned white Renault Kwid at the corner of Fourth and Fifth avenues in Marlboro. Police established that the vehicle had previously been stolen from its owner.

Later that day, officers also recovered an abandoned white Toyota Quantum at the corner of Griffiths and Albertina Sisulu streets in Bosmont after receiving information that it had been stolen.

Meanwhile, officers patrolling Hull and Third streets in Florida arrested another suspect after allegedly finding two small packets of nyaope during a stop-and-search operation.

All recovered vehicles were booked into the police pound for safekeeping and further investigation.

The six suspects are expected to appear in court on charges ranging from possession of drugs and possession of suspected stolen property to malicious damage to property and intimidation.
