What begins as a bag of unwanted clothing ends up supporting two causes. At Gem Homes in Roosevelt Park, donated items help raise funds for elderly residents, while those that cannot be sold are passed on free of charge to families in need.

Sheryl Peters, who manages the Gem Homes clothing stall, said every donated item is put to good use, helping both the Roosevelt Park retirement home and communities in need.

She explained that clothing donations are carefully sorted, with quality items sold through the home’s charity stall. The proceeds are used to supplement Gem Homes’ income, helping fund maintenance projects, improve facilities and assist residents who cannot fully afford their living costs.

The clothing stall forms part of the home’s twice-yearly fundraising events, held in July and before the festive season, alongside other resident-run stalls. Peters said donations that cannot be sold are never wasted. Instead, they are distributed free of charge to township communities, ensuring they continue to benefit people in need.

“It’s about making sure every donation serves a purpose. If we can’t sell it to raise funds for the home, we make sure it reaches someone who needs it.”

She said the initiative allows a single donation to have a wider impact by supporting both Gem Homes residents and vulnerable families beyond the retirement home.
