The Greymont community are on high-alert after a series of palm tree fires in the suburb has raised fears that a suspected arsonist is deliberately targeting the area.

At least four palm trees were set alight in the early hours of July 20 across 2nd, 4th, and 8th streets before another fire was reported days later, prompting residents to share security footage with police and private security companies. One of the families affected by these acts wished to remain anonymous due to an ongoing investigation said their neighbours’ surveillance cameras captured what appears to be a white two-door Volkswagen Polo stopping alongside a palm tree shortly before the fire started.

They explained that, although the footage does not clearly show how the fire was ignited, it shows the driver getting out of the vehicle, disappearing behind the tree for a short period before driving away. A few minutes later, flames became visible. According to the family, the same vehicle later made a U-turn and travelled towards 8th Street, where another camera captured a palm tree catching alight.

They added that the vehicle returned to the neighbourhood again a few days later, this time during the early evening, slowing down near her home before driving back towards the area where previous fires had occurred.

The first fire was only discovered after a neighbour, who had been awakened by his dog during the early hours of the morning, noticed the flames and attempted to alert nearby residents.

Ward 86 community liaison officer Linda Verwey said reports of the fires first surfaced through the community WhatsApp group she manages for Greymont. Verwey said the similar locations, timing, and apparent method used in the incidents suggest the fires could be connected, although this has not been officially confirmed.

She warned that the fires pose a serious risk because burning palm trees could easily spread flames to nearby homes, making the incidents particularly concerning for residents.

Private security companies and emergency services responded quickly to the reported fires, helping to prevent more extensive damage. Verwey encouraged homeowners to keep palm trees properly maintained, noting that dry fronds not only increase the fire risk but can also interfere with power lines and damage neighbouring properties.

Residents have since been urged to remain vigilant, review security camera footage where possible, and immediately report any suspicious vehicles or activity to police and security companies as investigations continue.

The publication contacted Sophiatown SAPS for official comment and posed several questions, all of which they declined to respond to.
