Fairland artist proves it’s never too late to discover your creativity
After retiring, Pat Thomson picked up a paintbrush and discovered more than a hobby – she found a new purpose, lasting friendships, and the confidence to dream again.
For much of her life, Patricia ‘Pat’ Thomson’s creativity quietly waited in the background.
There were children to raise, a career to build, and responsibilities that naturally came first. The little girl who once filled a family blackboard with chalk drawings and dreamed of becoming a window dresser simply tucked that dream away. It wasn’t lost. It was just waiting.
Now, retired and living in Fairland, Thomson has spent the past decade rediscovering the artist she always knew was there. “I’ve always been interested in art. When I retired, I had the time to take it up properly and discovered how much I loved it.”

Weekly art classes at the Berario Recreation Centre have helped nurture that passion, but Thomson insists there is no secret talent reserved for a lucky few. “Art is a skill. You can learn to paint. Everybody has a talent. You just need somebody to help bring it out of you.”

Her vibrant, expressionist-style landscapes reflect her love of nature and the places she has visited, inspired by travels across Europe and the changing colours of different skies. Whether working in oils or challenging herself with watercolours, each completed painting still surprises her. “When I’ve finished, I look at it and think, ‘Did I actually do that?’.”

Yet art is only one brushstroke in a retirement she has filled with purpose. Thomson attends a senior fitness group, crochets blankets and baby clothing with friends for charities, tends to her garden, and continues to seek out new challenges. She believes that staying curious has been the key to making retirement one of the busiest – and happiest – chapters of her life. “If you’re retiring, go and find something to do. There’s so much out there if you go looking.”
Although she has never held an exhibition, she now hopes to begin selling some of her work – a goal that took 10 years to embrace. Perhaps that is the greatest lesson in Thomson’s story. Some dreams don’t disappear with time. They wait patiently until life finally gives them the space to grow.
