Fairland police record 75 arrests following crime spike
The local CPF meeting highlighted urgent night-time security operational shifts and school safety measures across the precinct.
Fairland police have raised concerns over rising crime and limited resources, with the station increasing operations and calling for stronger cooperation between police, residents and private security companies.
Speaking at the Fairland CPF meeting, station commander Lieutenant Colonel Buyisile Mvelase said August was a challenging month for the station, with increases recorded in several crime categories. The station made 75 arrests during August and conducted 13 operations, including school operations aimed at addressing bullying, fighting and other incidents involving learners.

Mvelase said the station had also started analysing crime trends according to days and times to improve its operational planning. The analysis showed that a significant number of reported incidents occurred at night, prompting the station to consider shifting more resources towards evening and overnight operations.
Mvelase said night operations would be prioritised as property crimes rise.
Crime concerns raised during the meeting included:
- Theft out of motor vehicles
- Gate motor theft
- House burglaries
- Business burglaries and other property-related crimes

Police urged residents to take greater responsibility for preventing crime by securing their properties, locking vehicles and avoiding leaving valuables visible inside their cars. Mvelase advised residents to report crimes and suspicious activity to 10111 so that incidents can be recorded.

Police said these issues required cooperation between SAPS, other government departments, businesses and the community. Mvelase said the station would continue using crime trends to guide its operations and encouraged residents and security companies to work closely with police to address crime across the area.
