University of Johannesburg top Varsity Football log after beating University of Western Cape
After a goalless first half, the home side found their finishing touch to claim a 2-0 victory and stay on top.
The University of Johannesburg senior men’s football team strengthened their position at the top of the Varsity Football standings with a hard-fought 2–0 victory over the University of the Western Cape on September 11, taking their tally to 16 points.
The round 6 encounter began cautiously, with neither side able to break the deadlock in a disciplined opening half. University of the Western Cape goalkeeper Zubeir Mohamed denied point-blank efforts from Tshepo Mosieleng and Mfundo Ngema before producing another impressive save to keep out Njabulo Jele’s long-range strike.
Despite sustained pressure from the Orange Army, the University of the Western Cape defended resolutely and went into the break with the scores level. The visitors looked to threaten after the restart, with Mesuli Manzi attempting to create opportunities down the right, but the University of Johannesburg defence dealt with the danger.
The University of Johannesburg finally broke the deadlock in the 55th minute after a deep throw-in caused confusion inside the University of the Western Cape penalty area. Yasidu Lifa reacted quickest to a failed clearance and calmly finished to give the home side the lead.

Both sides made tactical changes as the match entered its final stages, opening up the game and creating more space. The University of Johannesburg eventually sealed the result through substitute Tumelo Machete, who connected with a precise pull-back from Sandile Nkosi before firing a first-time left-footed shot into the net to make it 2–0.
Mohamed continued to frustrate the University of Johannesburg in the closing stages, making several important saves to prevent the deficit from growing. However, the University of Johannesburg held their advantage and finished the fixture with another three points, maintaining their place at the summit of the Varsity Football standings.
