Water lovers discover canoe polo at Dabulamanzi open day
The open day introduced newcomers to a fast-paced water sport that combines fitness, teamwork and friendship, with coaching available for those who want to continue.
Community members had an opportunity to swap dry land for the water on October 17, when Dabulamanzi Canoe Club hosted a canoe polo open day aimed at introducing more people to the fast-paced team sport.
The event gave newcomers a chance to experience a sport that combines canoeing with elements of water polo and rugby, while learning the basics under the guidance of a coach Ruhan Marx.

Marx said the open day was organised to introduce more people to canoe polo and grow participation in a sport that develops fitness and teamwork. “It’s a very holistic sport,” he said, “so it trains a lot of things – teamwork, not to mention the fitness that you require to play the sport.”
For those who had never paddled before, the first challenge was learning to keep their boats upright. Marx said beginners could also expect to practise paddling in a straight line, handling a ball and eventually attempting to score a goal. Although the boats may initially feel unstable, he said newcomers often become more comfortable as they gain experience.

Safety formed part of the introduction, with participants shown what to do if they capsized and how to get themselves safely back to the side of the water.

Beyond the physical challenge, Marx said the friendships and sense of belonging within the sport were among its greatest attractions. Describing canoe polo as a sport where people make friends for life, he said the club hoped participants would leave having enjoyed themselves and discovered a new hobby.
The sport is open to young people aged 12 and older, as well as adults interested in trying something different. Those who want to continue after an introductory session can explore the club’s regular coaching sessions and opportunities to progress into competitive play.
