I just thought I would write in about the serious matter of the beggars around the University of Johannesburg and Auckland Park Campus Square.

In the last few months the number of beggars have increased dramatically, to the point they are taking shifts. However, this is less disturbing in light of the fact that some of them are becoming ever more violent. No to mention all the mess they leave after emptying the rubbish from municipal dustbin bags.

There have been cases of them hitting cars, swearing and even harassing pedestrians and motor vehicle drivers. I have had my share of this too.

On my way home from the university, a beggar with a scale burn arm approaches my vehicle asking for money, which I refused. He went into a complete frenzy by cursing such awful

things saying that I owe him. He went off to beg at other motorists and came back down to me starting to threaten me saying, “I am going to kill you”over and over again.

The fact of the matter is that they are encouraged to be there.

There are places that will give them food and help whatever it may be. It is just disturbing that they are starting to threaten people who will not help them in the way they want.

I personally give money to a church to help them.

How do you know if they will not take that money and spend it on things such as drugs or alcohol?

When will enough be enough?
