Three generations remain

GREENSIDE – Son, father and grandfather play in soccer match at Pirates.

The Pirates Sports Club witnessed a rare feat when a grandfather, father, and son played in the same soccer match recently. Danny Becker, a former Transvaal cricketer, his son Grant and grandson Ethan played for the Remains of Africa soccer team against Spoofers in a Johannesburg Social Soccer League match at the club in Greenside. Remains of Africa is based at Pirates, while Spoofers hails from George Lea Park in Parkmore.

“We unfortunately lost 2–0, but that did not dampen the occasion as the Remains have a very long history of honouring the beautiful game,” said Marc Spries, a player with 250 caps for Remains. Co-founder of Remains, Terry Gilham explained that the team does not discriminate against anyone because of their age. “A person’s age is of no consequence for us,” he said. “We have guys in their 60s, like me, and young guys too. It has always been about [having] fun for us.”
