KG beats world number 2
WESTDENE – Westdene resident makes SA proud in wheelchair tennis tournament.
Kgothatso Montjane (aka KG) from Westdene secured straight-sets win at the Melbourne Open on 19 January in Australia.
Montjane defeated world number two Yui Kamiji from Japan, to move into the semi-finals of the Melbourne Open, an International Tennis Federation (ITF) level two event part of the UNIQLO Wheelchair Tennis Tour.
Seventh seed Montjane produced a masterclass performance to beat her Japanese opponent 6–3; 6–2.
The South African star’s win against top seed Kamiji means that she plays third seed Germany’s Sabine Ellerbrock for a place in the final. It will be a repeat of the recent Sydney Open women singles quarter-final round where she sent third seed Ellerbrock packing 6–4; 7–6. Ellerbrock will try to avenge her Sydney Open loss.
Montjane added another top title to her portfolio after winning the wheelchair tennis doubles at Apia Sydney Open last weekend. Montjane and her doubles partner Ellerbrock defeated fourth-seeds Kanako Domori and Yui Kamiji of Japan in straight sets 6–2; 6–4.
“It has a been a great journey so far in Australia, I played a great match today, I played my best tennis and made few mistakes and I’m very confident going into the big one, the Australian Open Grand Slam,” said Montjane.
