Women take to the greens

ROOSEVELT PARK – A fantastic women's tournament is held at Roosevelt Park Bowls.

The Roosevelt Park Bowls recently opened its greens to a group of passionate women bowlers. The women came from various bowls clubs to try win at the three-week-long Ladies 2-4-2 Tournament.

Tournament matches took place on every Tuesday for three weeks. The organiser of the event, Denise Strauch, said the tournament battled to get going in its earlier years but eventually picked up pace. “I wanted something that was just for the women – something special for us to do without the men,” she said.

The tournament took place on 14 ends and saw teams of two bowl against each other. These teams consisted of a skip and a partner. A skip is someone who instructs their partner on where they should play their shots and they also keep score on the scorecard. The greens were filled with passionate bowlers who just wanted to leave victorious.

Their passion was no match for the unpredictable weather that did not dampen their will. During a storm, the bowlers were rushed off the greens when the club’s lightning meter showed that the lightning was too close to the greens. After a while of waiting for the bad weather to move away, the bowlers went back onto the greens with even greater determination.

The deserving winners of the tournament were skip, Yvonne Hattingh and partner, Del Bowman, who were fierce competitors. They were followed by second-place finishers, skip, Morag Forster-Jones and her partner, Vanessa Sergeant. Taking third place was skip, Jill Sinclair and Cathy Dryburgh.

All the women left with not only great friendships, which was coupled with a great session of tea and delicious treats, but they each received a gift for their participation.
