Madalas whip the laaitjies

GREENSIDE – Pirates Madalas beat the Pirates 4th team 36–12 in a pre-season friendly game.

Experience triumphed over youth when the Madalas whipped the Pirates Rugby Club 4th team 36–12 in a pre-season friendly.

The Madalas – a Pirates old boys team with a minimum age of 32 – completely out-played their younger opponents in every area of rugby, showing that age hardly matters when experience is combined with determination and ruthlessness.

In the opening minutes of the game, the old-timers worked their way through the Pirates defence with strong front line and clever backline runs in blitzkrieg style, leaving their opponents two tries down and shell-shocked.

For Pirates, it became a matter of trying to slow the Madalas’ game down, keeping as much possession as they could and scoring the odd point. The game finished six tries to two.

“We played very nicely and it was nice to see the young players in the 4th team show their potential,” said a modest Madalas manager, Sean Buschau.

He paid tribute to Man of the Match, flyhalf Clayton Durandt, who scored one try and three conversions for the Madalas.

Rugby club chairperson, Brad Guymer said the club had a proud history of a strong Madalas side, which had played in the SA Legends tournament a few years back, and this September will compete in the Old Boys Nationals.

“Credit must also go to the 4th team,” he said.

“The Madalas have played together for years and know their game. The 4th team showed potential and many of the players could move up as far as the 2nd team in the next few months, if they stick to their guns.”
