Squash underdogs hold their own
NORTHCLIFF – Northcliff High School was unexpectedly invited to participate in the prestigious South African Top Schools Squash Tournament.
Northcliff High School’s squash team went into an interprovincial tournament as the underdogs and unofficially ended in 7th place.
The school was selected as an invitational replacement team to the South African Top Schools Squash Tournament. The invitation came after another team withdrew from the competition.
Because the school played as an invitational team, they could not officially be ranked at the end of the tournament
Usually, only the top ranked team in each province qualifies. For Gauteng, St Mary’s School took the top spot.
The competition was held on 11 to 13 August in Pietermaritzburg, KwaZulu-Natal. Demi Galanakis, Taneal Rocher and Megan Shannon of Northcliff made up the team and were joined by two other players from the host school to make up a team.
Although their position couldn’t be recognised, the mere fact that they were chosen out of all other schools in the country by Squash South Africa was enough for them.
The school felt that it was a prestige to be headhunted and to perform so well even though they were unprepared.
“I think the team worked really hard,” Tanya van Rensburg, Nothcliff’s squash manager told Northcliff Melville Times.
“They were very passionate. They played really well and we’re happy about how we did.”
