‘Here I Am’
NORTHCLIFF - Recovering from addiction is never easy, but with some good PJ Powers music, support and friends the journey becomes a little lighter.
“I’m gonna take my hand and lead me down the road to where I want to be. I’m gonna look up now and shine and know that I create my own destiny.”
On a balmy morning on 3 August famous rocker PJ Powers opened the Changes Treatment Centre in Northcliff in powerful fashion.
Changes is an acronym for the Centre for Healing, Addiction, Nurturing, Growth and Emotional Serenity.
Powers started the morning by reading from her newly launched book Here I Am. The book deals with her childhood, political experiences and her struggle with sobriety.
“Here I am, standing in this newly opened in-patient rehabilitation centre, and I’ve been clean, sober and serene for five years,” Powers told the crowd of 200.
Her candid story had a visible emotional impact on the crowd, and Powers had them on her feet when she sang renditions of her newest songs.
Changes Treatment Centre treats all addictions, and offers in-patient and out-patient treatment for gambling, drug and alcohol addiction as well as eating disorders, relationship, sex or love-addictions.
“We had such true fun at this completely sober event,” Cheryl Rahme, one of the centre’s founders said.
“One of the attendees told me that if this was how recovery went, she would always want to be recovering here.”
