Louw goes beyond the script

MELVILLE – Actor, David Louw expresses his thoughts far beyond the roles he plays on our TV screens.

In a quaint coffee shop in Melville, David Louw sits in at a table perfectly positioned near a window so the sun can stream in onto him. A fitting position for a man who seems to just so unconsciously radiant warmth and confidence.

Louw grew up in the Free State in a small town named Vrede. There he spent the his schooling years doing as much school activities that he could manage. “My parents wanted me to be a holistic pupil, so I did sports, cultural activities and needed to do well at my schoolwork too,” said Louw.

He expressed that he had wanted to become an actor when he was still in school. After he matriculated he decided to study towards his passion. So he left the Free State and headed to the bustling metropolis of Pretoria. Here he enrolled into university and worked towards attaining his drama degree.”In my second year, I was approached by an agency and they signed me,” said Louw.

Through the years Louw has freelanced and been part of various productions be it on stage or in front of the camera. He featured in kykNET’s Villa Rosa where he played Petrus Steyn. He has also acted in Afrikaans films: Modder en Bloed, Forsaken and Wolwedens in die Skemer. He currently plays Simon Greef in kykNET’s Getroud met Rugby.

The passionate actor disclosed that following one’s passion should never be a question. “Doing what you love should never be about the money,” said Louw.

He added that doing what you love should be looked at as a career and not merely just as a job. “When you are going about just doing a job you end up looking down at your watch in frustration hoping the day would come to an end, when you have a career, you are willing to do what it takes for it even if it means waking up at 3am to fulfill its demands,” he said.

Along with now owning his own production company, Louw also goes to schools and motivates young minds. His ambitions go far beyond just being content with speaking to people through a role written out for him on TV. He also aims to do this through his own live lessons and whatever wisdom he can impart to be the change in a society he feels has the capability to define you before you have defined yourself.
