Creativity on display
ROOSEVELT – Embroidery and lace fanatics came in their numbers to experience the bi-annual joint exhibition.
The Witwaterand Embroiders Guild and the Witwatersrand Lace Guild hosted their bi-annual joint exhibition at Roosevelt Park Recreation Centre from 14 to 15 October.
The exhibition was attended by members and visitors from all walks of life who came to see beautiful creations.Chairperson of the Witwatersrand Lace Guild, Janis Savage, said the guild aims to promote all types of lace-making in Johannesburg and celebrated its 55th birthday celebration last year. The guild meets on every second Saturday of the month and the embroidery guild meets every Tuesday.
“Our annual exhibition is in collaboration with the embroiders guild. We thought it would be a great idea to collaborate in order to make it bigger and give people the opportunity to come on one day to see the guilds’ work. The response from attendees has been absolutely wonderful and there has been a steady stream of people who attended,” said Savage.
The exhibition had a variety of handcrafted items on display and visitors also got to walk around and discover the history behind the talented guild members and the items they made.
Embroidery guild member, Pat Mentz, said she has been a member for the past 33 years and believes the exhibition has developed since its inception. She added that it is always well laid out and that they have had a better turnout this year.
Chairperson of the Witwaterand Embroiders Guild, Hettie Moller said they have incorporated more items into the exhibition this year.
“Some pieces of embroidery have an interesting history behind them and are quite unique. Smocking dresses have been made popular by Princess Charlotte of Cambridge,” said Moller.
