A night of merriment

Our Club, a non-profit organisation established about 35 years ago, hosted its annual Christmas party where members and visitors spent an evening of laughs and good food together.

Chairperson and trustee of the club, Sandy Green, said that 91 people attended and it was a lovely night spent with wonderful people.

Green explained that the organisation was formed after a widowed woman had the deep desire to socialise with people who also felt lonely.

“So she sent a request in the local newspaper, seeking friendships with people her age and the response was overwhelming.”

From there they decided to meet every week and after that weekly success, they decided to name the club, Our Club.

She added that there were too many lonely people in the world and there is always space for new members to find joy at the club. Green said that it is important to them to continue with the tradition and they further give a percentage of their profit to charity.

A great majority of the members have grown with the club and for many women, in particular, this organisation serves as a place of safety for them as they get to spend time with people they know and trust.

One of the club members, Wendy Vorster-Robinson said, “The club has since progressed to become a ‘friendship club’ where you can mingle with people who like the same things you do and are of more or less the same age.”
