Reasons to dream

NORTHCLIFF – Reason gives us a glimpse into who he is as a rapper.

While getting his hair and nails done, local musician Sizwe Moeketsi, popularly known as Reason, squeezed in an interview with Northcliff Melville Times.

Reason is one of South Africa’s most loved hip-hop artists and he explained that he takes his rap career as seriously as anyone with a nine-to-five job.

“I treat my career as I would any job. I am always professional, but the only difference is that with my job as a rapper I have to be creative and that is why I use what’s around me to source my creativity,” Reason said.

The musician admits that being creative is not as easy, but when he experiences writer’s block, he embraces it and just uses his surroundings to influence his lyrics.

Reasons road to stardom was not always easy especially when he had to explain to his parents that he wanted to be a rapper.

“My mom was supportive but my dad was like ‘oh no, if this is what you want to do best do it with your own money’ and urged me to get a real job,” the father of two explained.

After leaving school, Reason joined an advertising company through a learnership through the Imagination Lab, but at the same time he pushed his music and was the hype man (back-up rapper) for rapper, Proverb, and dropped a verse or two on other hip-hop artists’ tracks such as H2O, Zubbs and Optical Illusion.

Born in Thembisa but brought up in Katlehong, the rapper’s next step was to top charts overseas and break boundaries each and every way that he could.

“It’s great to be great in South Africa but other artists, the likes of Hugh Masikela and Yvonne Chaka Chaka have set the tone for performing overseas and it must become normal for South African artists to be overseas,” he added.

With four albums already under his belt Reason is set to drop his fifth album titled, Girls, very soon.
