THE role of sport in prisoner rehabilitation and the subsequent impact thereof on behavioural improvements is widely recognised as beneficial to offenders and the communities they are released into after serving their sentences.
By maintaining and improving the general wellness of prisoners through the implementation of sports programmes, Ncome Prison’s Bhekie Zuma, who is responsible for getting the prisoners involved in sports, is playing an integral part in the rehabilitation of these prisoners.
The Ncome Soccer League for Offenders is intended to encourage inmates to participate, with the mission of rehabilitation and, at this point, there are almost ten teams taking part.
Ncome Prison would like to urge businesses and the private sector to assist in this rehabilitation process by sponsoring the teams with the necessary equipment and donations to keep this initiative afloat.
This season’s winning team was ‘Liverpool’ who took three trophies: the Offenders’ League, the Top 8 and the Telkom Cup. Second place went to the ‘Barcelona’ team.
December 3 to 4 saw the staff of Ncome travel to Newcastle for a tournament for over 35’s, where the Ncome team, representing Zululand, beat Amajuba 2-1, sealing their spot to represent KZN at the nationals next year.
