2 arrests as cops recover firearm and drugs

The men face charges relating to possession of illegal substances and possession of an unlicensed firearm.

An Intelligence-driven operation conducted on Saturday evening (November 22) resulted in the arrest of two men and the recovery of a firearm, drugs and cash.

The operation, carried out by law enforcement officers, first targeted a residence in the KwaBhekuzulu area of Estcourt. Officers moved in quickly, catching the suspect by surprise. He was found in possession of an unlicensed 9mm pistol and was immediately taken into custody.

Following the first arrest, the team proceeded to Ezakheni in the Ladysmith area, where they intercepted a vehicle travelling along Helpmekaar Road. A search of the driver and the vehicle turned up 39 pieces of rock cocaine with an estimated street value of over R10,000, along with a substantial amount of cash believed to be the proceeds of crime.

The two men who were arrested face charges relating to possession of illegal substances and possession of an unlicensed firearm. The authorities have confirmed that the recovered pistol will undergo ballistic testing to determine whether it was used in any other crimes in the country.

This operation reflects the ongoing efforts by law enforcement to curb drug-related crime and the circulation of illegal firearms in the region.
