uThukela introduces 50% water debt relief for domestic consumers

The incentive is available until November 30, 2026.

uThukela District Municipality has announced a financial relief initiative aimed at assisting domestic consumers with outstanding water accounts. The district municipality has approved a 50% incentive discount on outstanding household water debt that is 60 days or older.

The incentive came into effect on June 23 and will be available until November 30, giving qualifying households an opportunity to significantly reduce their outstanding water debt while bringing their accounts up to date.

Prescribed debt write-off also approved

In addition to the incentive discount, uThukela has approved the write-off of prescribed debt. This applies to debt that is three years or older as of April 30, 2026, provided that consumers meet the applicable requirements set out by the municipality.

The prescribed debt write-off is intended to help eligible consumers by removing qualifying historical debt in accordance with the relevant legal and municipal policies.

Who qualifies for the relief?

According to uThukela, the 50% incentive discount is available only to domestic (household) consumers with qualifying outstanding water debt.

Businesses, commercial customers and other consumer categories do not qualify. However, they may still be eligible for the prescribed debt write-off, provided they satisfy uThukela’s relevant requirements.

Consumers are encouraged to contact uThukela for more information on eligibility criteria, application procedures, and the conditions attached to both the incentive discount and the prescribed debt write-off.
