Road rehabilitation set to begin on key Vryheid streets
Road rehabilitation begins as AbaQulusi Municipality introduces contractors for key Vryheid streets.
AbaQulusi Local Municipality Mayor Sifiso Mkhwanazi has introduced contractors who will be responsible for the rehabilitation and resurfacing of several roads in the Vryheid central business district (CBD), marking the start of a long-awaited intervention to improve the town’s deteriorating road infrastructure.
The initial phase of the project will focus on Landdrost, President, Hlobane, Stretch Crescent, Kerk, Utrecht and Nyala streets, among others. The municipality said these roads have been prioritised for immediate attention, while road conditions across Vryheid will continue to be monitored as part of a phased rehabilitation programme.
Priority roads identified for rehabilitation
The intervention follows the municipality’s declaration of a state of disaster on Vryheid’s road infrastructure earlier this year, acknowledging that years of deterioration have left many roads in poor condition.
The declaration came after ongoing concerns from residents and motorists over worsening potholes, crumbling road edges and repairs that have failed under heavy traffic volumes and persistent rainfall. The municipality has since appointed professional local engineers to assess the damage and oversee the rehabilitation programme.
Traffic disruptions expected during construction
Mayor Mkhwanazi urged motorists to be patient during the construction period, warning that temporary stop-and-go traffic controls will be implemented on affected roads to accommodate the rehabilitation work.
He also indicated that contractors have been encouraged to work beyond normal operating hours where possible to help accelerate the projects and minimise inconvenience to road users.
Local employment opportunities
Mkhwanazi said residents from the affected wards will be employed during the implementation of the project, creating temporary job opportunities for local communities.
The mayor was accompanied by municipal councillors and officials during the introduction of the contractors.
