Newcastle Municipality steps up water and sanitation action
Municipal management inspect problem areas and push for action regarding long-running backlogs.
Newcastle Municipality is intensifying efforts to address long-standing water and sanitation challenges across Newcastle, with senior management undertaking targeted site inspections in areas where service delivery concerns and backlogs have been reported.
According to municipal spokesperson Musa Ngcobo, the intervention forms part of the municipality’s ongoing commitment to ensuring that reported water and sanitation challenges are not only attended to, but subjected to sustained technical intervention, monitoring and follow-through until appropriate solutions are implemented.

Officials inspect areas affected by service delivery concerns
Senior municipal management – including senior executive director for Community Services Mr Dlamini; acting senior executive director Ms Thabisile Sithole; directors; managers; technical officials and representatives from various municipal departments, including Technical Services and Community Services – were out conducting site visits yesterday (August 24).
Ngcobo said the multi-disciplinary approach is intended to ensure that water and sanitation challenges are assessed comprehensively, with relevant municipal units working collectively to identify immediate interventions, determine longer-term remedial measures and strengthen co-ordination on matters affecting residents, businesses and commuters.
One of the key areas visited was the Newcastle Taxi Rank, where sanitation-related challenges have been raised and identified as requiring urgent attention.
“The municipality has acknowledged the concerns associated with the area and is taking steps to ensure that the challenges are addressed through appropriate operational and technical interventions,” said Ngcobo.
He continued that, “Importantly, the municipality emphasises that the matters identified during the site visits are receiving attention and that the process does not end with an inspection.”
According to Ngcobo, the focus is on translating observations into concrete actions, clear responsibilities and sustained monitoring to ensure that interventions result in tangible improvements on the ground.
Acting municipal manager Ms Pearl Kubheka has directed senior management and the relevant municipal departments to intensify their efforts to address outstanding service delivery matters and expedite interventions relating to long-standing water and sanitation challenges.
“We cannot afford long-standing service delivery challenges to remain unresolved or for reported problems to move from one reporting cycle to another without tangible intervention. Our responsibility is to ensure that matters affecting our communities are properly assessed, prioritised and addressed through co-ordinated municipal action,” said Kubheka.

Municipality promises sustained action and monitoring
Ngcobo said the municipality would strengthen its approach through joint site assessments, inter-departmental co-ordination, technical evaluations and continuous monitoring of identified challenges.
“This approach is intended to ensure that operational challenges are dealt with expeditiously while also identifying infrastructure and systemic matters that may require more comprehensive interventions,” explained Ngcobo.
He further said the site inspections provide an opportunity for senior management and technical officials to engage directly with conditions on the ground, assess the extent of reported challenges, and determine the most appropriate interventions within the municipality’s operational and technical capacity.
“Newcastle Municipality recognises that reliable water and sanitation services are fundamental to public health, dignity, economic activity and the overall quality of life of residents,” said Ngcobo.
Accordingly, the municipality said it remains committed to strengthening the responsiveness of its service delivery systems and ensuring that reported challenges receive the necessary attention.
“The municipality will continue to monitor the identified areas and will work through the relevant municipal structures to ensure that interventions are implemented and followed through.”
Residents are encouraged to continue reporting water, sanitation and other service delivery challenges through the municipality’s established reporting channels.
Such reports assist the municipality in identifying areas requiring intervention, prioritising resources and strengthening its response to community needs.
“The message from Newcastle Municipality is clear: identified service delivery challenges must be met with action, co-ordination and accountability,” concluded Ngcobo.
