Local cops excel at combat rifle champs
A total of 112 officers from the SAPS, the Army and Correctional Services took part in these prestigious championships

The annual Natal Combat Rifle Championships were held at the shooting range last Friday and Saturday.
A total of 112 officers from the SAPS, the Army and Correctional Services took part in these prestigious championships. “The aim of this competition is to improve skills within the armed forces,” said Natal Combat Rifle Club chairman Mr van der Merwe.
Events included shooting at various distances at ‘still’ and ‘snapping’ targets. The latter is when the target goes up and down, and the officers must time the shot down to the second in order to shoot at the correct target, at the right place. All the officers who took part used an R4 rifle.
Local police officers Detective Sergeant Dave Warmenhoven and Sergeant Marc Potas did exceptionally well at the competition.
Sgt Potas of the Ladysmith K9 Unit took home three gold medals, as well as one silver and two bronze. Det Sgt Warmenhoven also walked away with three gold medals, together with two silver and one bronze. Det Sgt Warmenhoven was selected for the Natal A team and to shoot for the national South African police team, which includes many Springbok marksmen.
