Saturday’s Vryheid parkrun was a memorable one, with a first-time junior runner taking the overall win, 20 personal bests being recorded and participants adding a splash of purple to the morning in celebration of Women’s Month.

Phakathi makes winning parkrun debut

First-time parkrunner and junior runner Qiniso Phakathi produced an outstanding run to cross the finish line first in a rapid 16:29.

Liané van Zyl was the first female finisher and also marked the occasion with a personal best. She joined fellow parkrunners in wearing purple as part of the Women’s Month celebrations.

20 personal bests recorded

There was plenty more reason to celebrate, with an impressive 20 personal best times recorded during Saturday’s event.

Congratulations went to Steven, Andile, Adriaam, Alex, Phumlani, Liané, Jeanie, Zethembe, Ntando, Mnotho, David, Sthembile, Sugandren, Deana, Nonsikelelo, Sithembumusa, Amanda, Lwazi, Jessica and Belinda.

Parkrun brings generations together

The morning also highlighted the inclusive nature of parkrun, with participants ranging in age from an 18-month-old enjoying the route from a pushchair to runners and walkers aged over 80.

With participants running, walking and supporting one another, Saturday’s event once again showed that parkrun is an activity that can be enjoyed across generations.

The purple theme added an extra sense of community to the morning as Vryheid parkrunners joined the wider celebration of Women’s Month.
