Social Development MEC, Weziwe Thusi, visited Vryheid on Saturday as part of her initiative to improve living conditions within the AbaQulusi community.
Having visited the local dumpsite late last year and finding close to 258 people living there, most of whom were unemployed and depending on collecting items from the site, which they sold as part of recycling in order to make ends meet, the MEC promised to return to Vryheid with means to help these people.
On Saturday, MEC Thusi, handed over Early Childhood Development Centre (ECDC) equipment, toys, desks, chairs and learning materials to an ECDC at the dumpsite.
The ECDC was also assisted to apply for funding from the National Lottery Board.
The MEC also visited a local luncheon club that comprises of 67 members, which she identified while doing her constituency work. There she handed over three sewing machines, tables and blankets.
The Department has also provided social relief of distress to the poorest dumpsite family members, while a Community Nutrition Development Centre is set to prepare and deliver cooked meals at the dumpsite.
