Last weekend, Newcastle was the battleground for teams from around the province during the annual Natal District Country Hockey Tournament.
The tournament was played between Northern Natal, the Midlands and Zululand.
Each district had two teams representing the district, and games began at 9.30am on Friday morning.
Northern Natal A Men’s and Ladies’ sides both made it to the finals, tackling Midlands in both games.
The games were nail biting and neither side was willing to back down and give up their hard-earned positions.
The bounce of the ball did not favour Northern Natal and the men succumbed to a two-one loss, while the ladies lost two-nil.
The B sides performed excellently as well, when both sides won their final games and respective divisions.
This was the first time ever the ladies B side topped the division.
The tournament was a huge success, and the hockey club committee thanked the Newcastle community for helping to put it all together and for supporting the event.
A special thanks went to the sponsors of the tournament, who ensured the Newcastle Tournament was one to remember.
