So much more than a stroll through the park

Health and fitness fanatics gathered at Grey Goose Game Lodge for the first-ever local Parkrun on November 7.
The Newcastle branch of Discovery Health partnered with Parkrun South Africa to bring the internationally endorsed event to Newcastle.
About 120 participants braved the sweltering heat for a scenic five kilometre run.
“For those who don’t know Parkrun, it is a precisely measured five kilometre course in park-like surroundings held every Saturday of the year at precisely 8am,” explained Event Director, Theresa Els.
The event is free of charge, and is open to both young and old from all walks of life.
To take part, hopefuls must register online at www.parkrun.co.za.
“Remember to link your South African ID or passport number to your profile. You can also register onsite, 45 minutes before the event begins.”
Discovery Vitality members can earn 500 Vitality points for every Parkrun completed.
About 60 Parkruns take place nationwide every Saturday. In South Africa alone, a quarter of a million people are registered runners.
“Worldwide, there will soon be over 2-million park runners,” said Mrs Els.
The reasoning behind bringing Parkrun to Newcastle was to attempt to address the destructive nature of the greater community’s lifestyle.
“We emphasise the need for everyone to have an exercise schedule if they want optimal physical, mental and emotional well-being,” added Mrs Els.
The team thanked Doctor Bryan Wilson for allowing the event to take place at his lodge.
“Without him, none of this would have been possible,” concluded Mrs Els.
Lace up your running shoes and join hundreds of others at the next Parkrun.
