Welcoming the Year of the Monkey
With the Year of the Monkey related to the earthly branch of the zodiac, this year promised to be a year of growth.
The Taiwanese community welcomed the dawn of their New Year last Saturday at Blackrock Casino, in a colourful and culturally rich celebration.
While the Year of the Monkey will officially begin on Monday, February 8, the celebrations marked a time of joy.
The monkey is the ninth of the 12-year cycle of animals in the Chinese zodiac on to the Chinese calendar. With the Year of the Monkey related to the earthly branch of the zodiac, this year promised to be a year of growth.
Taiwanese Ambassador, Zhang Chen, attended the event and expressed his delight in being a part of the festivities. “I wish everyone a good year and as the almighty monkey climbs, I hope this year will bring an end to the economic crisis and take people to new heights,” he said.
Mayor, Afzul Rehman said as the municipality was dedicated to attracting and developing businesses, he hoped the Year of the Monkey would be one of promise.
“I hope the almighty monkey brings good fortune,” he said.
Adding to the evening’s festivities, guests were treated to a cultural dance from members of the Nanhau Temple in Bronkorstspruit. Thee dragon dance captivated guests and signified a night of family fun and friendship.
