GALLERY: Cansa Relay for Life: Cancer fears the walker

Event Chairperson Anil Sookraj said that this year's Relay was another resounding success

Hundreds of people stood together to fight cancer. They showed their unity at the 24-hour CanSA Relay for Life, which was held on Saturday and Sunday.

The athletic track at Forderville Primary School was awash with purple as dozens of Relayers pledged their support in the fight against cancer.

Estcourt hosts a 24-hour Relay annually and has thus far, through this initiative, raised close to R1 million for the Cansa Association of South Africa.The CanSA Relay for Life is not just about raising funds, it is also a community-driven event that sees locals and visitors from all walks of life, come together with a common goal. Entertainment, pampering for survivors, song and dance, the Luminaria Ceremony as well as the beautiful fireworks display are just some of the highlights.

Event Chairperson Anil Sookraj said that this year’s Relay was another resounding success.

“Altogether R170 000 was raised by the teams and individuals. After paying for expenses incurred, the support group will hand over a cheque for R120 000 to the Cancer Association of South Africa. This is an amazing amount considering the difficult times we are living in. 2 500 walkers participated in the event, 35 teams representing family, religious, sporting, political and educational groups took part,” commented Mr Sookraj.

A presentation function will be held today, September 6 at Forderville Primary School at 6pm. All team captains are invited to attend.
