"Every human being should have the right to dignity. Among other rights, such as freedom of association, health care and safety and security."
The Newcastle Organisation for the Aged (Nofta) celebrated Human Rights Day (March 21), at its centre in Nightingale Street.
Social worker at Child Welfare, Farieda Mia addressed the senior citizens and explained the significance of Human Rights Day in South Africa.
“One of the most important rights we have is the right to equality. However, with rights come responsibilities,” said Mia.

She emphasised that the Constitution, as well as the Bill of Rights, protected South Africans.
“Every human being should have the right to dignity. Among other rights, such as freedom of association, health care and safety and security.”
The point that was driven home to senior citizens was that all people deserved basic human rights.
“We should give the same respect to others who don’t come from the same backgrounds as us. We need to change our mindsets and break the shackles of inequality,” concluded Mia.
Chairperson of Nofta, Rajesh Ramdaw thanked Mia and other speakers for their insightful advice and encouragement.
The day was concluded with a hot meal, and members engaged with each other and shared their past experiences.
