The workshop, which was attended by over 40 Wheelers, was aimed at providing the club members with the necessary tools to perfect their skill, and make their way to becoming worthy competitors on a professional level.

The cyclist was trained on bike maintenance the technical aspects of mountain biking as well as cycling. The Wheeler’s also had the chance to put what they learned into practice under the watchful eyes of the two professional instructors.

According to Hill, who has much experience in training other cyclist workshops like these are extremely important if you want to succeed as a professional cyclist.

“We teach people everything they possibly need to succeed and I feel like workshops like these are extremely important because they serve as ‘skills refreshers,’ even for professional cyclist,” he explained.

For him the benefits of these workshops are not only physical, but he explains that there is much more to gain from cycling, joining a club and attending workshops to better your craft.

“There is a lot more to cycling than keeping fit or staying healthy. You learn respect for others, you gain camaraderie and you make friends for life. That is what makes these workshops worthwhile.”

The Newcastle Wheelers Club has grown over 25% in the last year and according to Gerhard Strydom, chairman of the Newcastle Wheelers Club, they are a tight knit group of people drawn together by the love of the sport.

“You just need to start cycling and then the bug bites you. That’s how we all started, and today we are not only a cycling club but a family,” he said
