Hamilton pupil Ziyanda Mthembu (10) successfully completed the annual Drakensberg Polar Bear Swim Challenge in Winterton on June 27.

This marked her second consecutive year taking on the icy plunge. She was also honoured as the event’s Young Ambassador in recognition of her enthusiasm and dedication, and received several prizes for her participation.

Growing list of achievements

Mthembu began open water swimming in 2024 at the age of eight and has already completed events including the Midmar Mile, Sterkfontein Swim Challenge and Wagendrift Open Water Challenge, where she placed first in the Junior Female category.
