Disappointment for ‘Maroon Machine’

Their efforts were also not helped by the referee, whom the spectators felt made some shocking and one-sided calls

After a fantastic win over defending champions Piet Retief, Vryheid Rugby Club was left with numerous setbacks as they prepared for a strong Volksrust team on Volksrust’s home field over the weekend.

Numerous injuries to key players and several cases of seasonal illness meant that only 16 players in total were lucky enough to don the club’s brand new kit. In total, nine first team players were ruled out for the game.

The ‘Maroon Machine’ played bravely, considering how under-powered they were against a full-strength Volksrust team. The Vryheid men failed to capitalise on numerous opportunities to claw their way back into the game.

Their efforts were also not helped by the referee, whom the spectators felt made some shocking and one-sided calls. This broke Vryheid’s momentum when setting up phases. “The referee completely overlooked numerous instances of blatant foul play from the home team!” exclaimed one unhappy fan when spoken to after the game.

All things considered, Vryheid Rugby Club can take many positives from the game. Some of the junior players played their socks off for the entire 80+ minutes, in positions they normally don’t occupy. Defensively, Vryheid was once again solid, not allowing Volksrust to build momentum. Finally, even without key first team forwards, Vryheid never lost a scrum against Volksrust’s forwards; and the line-outs were clinical for the most part.

The match ended in a disappointing 8-15 loss, with the Volksrust team coming out on top.

The ‘Maroon Machine’ will have a well-deserved bye this coming weekend, which will allow the Vryheid Rugby Club players and management to regroup. Even with this disappointing result, Vryheid still holds top spot in their pool.
