Vryheid hosted the 2024 NKZN champions from Piet Retief over the weekend.
The inclusion of a few senior players bolstered the Vryheid line-up and it was generally a vastly improved performance compared to the previous weekend.
The senior leadership in the team gave direction, but fitness seemed to be lacking. The game was characterised by tries being exchanged, first one team and then the other, which made the encounter highly entertaining.
Injuries to key playmakers and lack of depth off the bench left Vryheid unable to gain ascendency when it was needed. As a result, the final score was 37-24 to Piet Retief.
‘Man of the Match’ for Vryheid in the forwards was 38-year-old Johannes Kruger, and in the backline Mnotho Mathe.
