Watersmeet residents protest over roadworks

The protest started at about 7am, with residents barricading the main road with stones and burning tyres

A group of about 20 residents closed off the streets of Watersmeet this morning, burning tyres and preventing anyone from leaving or coming into the area. They said this would continue until their councillor or someone in the know explains to them how long it is going to take to finish the roadworks that have been ongoing for the past two years.

The protesters sang and danced as they demanded answers from their councillor as to when the road will be finished. “Our cars are being damaged by the stones which were left by the contractors,” fumed one angry protester. The protest started at about 7am, with residents barricading the main road with stones and burning tyres.

Police and Public Safety were on scene to keep the situation under control. The officers told the residents they should hold a meeting with their councillor, where they can voice their grievances.
