Municipality removes roots threatening road safety
Technical teams have excavated affected sections of the road to expose invasive root systems.
Newcastle Municipality has started taking proactive steps to improve the condition of local roads.
This was evident this week when the municipality’s technical team was seen removing invasive tree roots along Agate Avenue in Sunny Ridge, which had caused significant damage to the road infrastructure.
According to a statement shared on the municipality’s official Facebook page, the work follows several complaints from motorists and residents about uneven road surfaces and cracks.
“Municipal technical teams identified large tree roots from roadside vegetation pushing up through the asphalt. The roots posed a safety risk to drivers and threatened to accelerate deterioration of the roadway if left unattended,” the municipality stated.
Repairs restore road safety
The technical teams excavated the affected sections of the road to expose the invasive root systems.
“The roots were carefully excavated and removed to prevent further uplift while preserving the health of nearby trees wherever possible,” the municipality explained.
The damaged tar was then replaced and compacted, with new asphalt laid to restore a smooth and safe driving surface.
Newcastle Mayor Xolani Dube emphasised the importance of these ongoing initiatives.
“Proactive road maintenance remains a priority for us. By addressing root damage early, we extend the lifespan of our tarred roads and ensure safer travel for all residents,” he concluded.
