Teens burned while bravely combating blaze
Despite being concerned about their injuries, the parents of the teens who combatted yesterday's fire are extremely proud of the decisive way they reacted in a crisis.

Four teens bravely combated a runaway fire that was driven dangerously close to the homes of about 13 families by yesterday’s tempestuous wind.
Reacting on instinct and driven by adrenaline, Calvin Brown (12), Donovan Brown (14), Casey Smith (14) and Tyler Smith (16) bravely fought the blaze on Kyalami Farm using fire beaters, hoses and buckets of water.
By the time the fire was finally quenched, Casey Smith was sporting second-degree burns on his feet, while Donovan Brown had minor burns on his hand.
They explained that Casey had run onto the smouldering grass barefoot as the fire was spreading so rapidly that there hadn’t been enough time for him to put his shoes on. Donovan tripped on smouldering grass while beating out the flames and put his hand out to break his fall.
While the boys’ parents were concerned about the injuries they sustained, they were extremely proud of the quick and decisive way they responded during the crisis.
Tyler Smith gallantly guided a farm labourer’s wife and her infant to safety when he noticed that her home was surrounded by thick black smoke.
The boys were assisted by Sherwin Moodley, a resident known to them as Uncle Braam, and farm labourers who helped steer the livestock to safety.
Lorna Brown, who is Calvin’s mother and Donovan’s aunt, said no-one knew how the fire had started, but residents were speculating that it may have been caused by three women who had been seen smoking while gather bundles of dry grass from the fields.
“When I first became aware of the fire, I stood outside and I couldn’t even see anything through the thick smoke. It was horrible,” said Mrs Brown.
Mr Moodley, who also played a big part in putting the fire out, said that he was shocked at how rapidly the fire had spread.ER24 paramedics who transported Casey to the Madadeni Provincial Hospital for treatment, said they were confident that he would make a full recovery soon.
