Foetus found at Old Toll House
She opened up the blanket and to her disgust, she found that it contained a dead little body

A foetus was found last week near the Old Toll House in Settlers Drive.
The dead baby was found by Ladysmith resident Laila Koen, who lives in the Old Toll House. She noticed a red plastic bag and a pink blanket lying next to the shed close to her home and wondered what was inside. She recalls that she had seen the items lying there the pervious week and that her husband had jokingly said, “It might be a bomb”. However, on Monday morning last week, before going to work, Laila decided to investigate. She opened up the blanket and to her disgust, she found that it contained a dead little body.
“The smell was terrible when I opened the blanket,” exclaims Laila. She covered up the foetus again and alerted the police as soon as she arrived at work. She says she phoned the police three times during the course of the day, but the officer she spoke to told her that all vehicles were out and that when a vehicle became available, she would send officers out. This did not happen on Monday.
She alerted the Ladysmith Gazette on Tuesday and a reporter was sent to the scene. Sharaj Ambulance Services also responded. Sharaj immediately contacted the police, who were at the scene within minutes. The mortuary van then arrived and took the foetus away.
“I couldn’t sleep, eat or even talk for a few days after I found the baby,” added Laila. “How can any woman do that? I am disgusted that a person could just leave their dead baby lying next to the road!”
Police are investigating a case of concealment of birth.
