A man has been taken into custody for assaulting a traffic official.

The incident took place on Saturday at Newcastle Mall.

Apparently, a traffic officer on lunch noticed a blue Golf parked in a parking bay reserved for the paraplegic.

“She approached the driver to issue a fine and to tell him to remove his vehicle from the spot,” claimed a source on the scene.

While the traffic officer was talking to the motorist, she noticed he had an alcoholic beverage in a glass.

The motorist apparently showed the traffic officer some alcohol in the boot, and according to the source, the motorist was rather apologetic at the stage.

However, when the traffic officer wanted to test the motorist’s alcohol level, he became aggressive.

“He refused to co-operate and drank a glass of water, which would flush the alcohol out of his system. When she tried to call for back-up to assist her, he turned it into a racial thing and pushed her in her face,” said the source.

The motorist’s friends apparently surrounded the traffic officer and wanted to assault her further when other traffic officials and police arrived.

The motorist was taken to the police station where his alcohol level would be tested and to determine further action to be taken.
