A fire gutted Habibia Butchery, situated on Voortrekker Street, in the early hours of Saturday morning.
The cause of the fire could not be determined the morning after, but it was speculated the ATM inside the butchery might have been the targeted.
A security guard thought the fire could have been caused by an electric problem. “It looks like the fire could have started above the cooling room in the butchery ceiling.”
A task force from Pretoria arrived on scene on Sunday to inspect the premises to help establish the cause of the fire.
Police from Newcastle could only conduct a thorough investigation on the premises on Monday.
After the search, it was found that the fire was started by an electrical fault.

It is believed a nearby car dealership also suffered loss when a vehicle net caught fire and damaged a vehicle. “It cannot be confirmed if this was a part of the fire at Habibia, but it is a strong possibility being looked into,” the source said.
Police investigations continue.
