Christmas joy through toy drive

Through the success of the 2012 ‘Community Toy Drive’, many underprivileged children of Newcastle enjoyed their Christmas season with a host of donated toys. This year, Bertus Grobler and John Hopkins envision a far larger event and contribution.

“Last year we accomplished what we set out to do. The toys we received from people there were awesome,” he enthused. “I loved every minute of the project and still have nerves about it. This event will be bigger though!”

The Community Toy Drive takes the form of an inter-denominational band performing Christmas carols ‘with a difference’, with a special performance this year from the Drakensberg Primary School choir. The entrance fee for the event is a toy, although those without toys to give will not be excluded.

Bertus and John emphasised everyone will be welcomed at the event on October 25 at Deo Victoria church from 6.30pm. Thanking the church for the use of their hall on short notice, they explained refreshments will be served and guests can mingle after the conclusion of the event.

“The feedback we got from last year was that people wanted more Christmas and we will give it to them!”
