Rural woman to celebrate sewing course completion in Nquthu

Nquthu women will celebrate completing a free three-month dressmaking course designed to build sewing skills and encourage entrepreneurship.

Rural women will celebrate their achievements and showcase their sewing skills at the Rural Women’s Basic Dressmaking Course completion ceremony on Thursday, October 29.

Hosted by the National Association of Car Wash Operators (NACWO), in partnership with the Phyllis Nonhlanhla Skhosane Organisation and Vibe and Stitch, the initiative provides free skills development training to women in rural communities.

The event will take place at Hlathi-Dam Community Hall in Ward 15, Nquthu, from 10:00 to 16:00.

The three-month programme aims to equip participants with practical dressmaking skills that could help them pursue self-employment, establish small businesses or explore careers in the clothing and textile industry.

Building skills and confidence

Andrew Kaas of NACWO said for participants, the course offers more than an introduction to sewing. “It provides an opportunity to develop confidence, gain practical experience and work towards greater financial independence.”

The completion ceremony will recognise the achievements of the Class of 2026, with participants receiving certificates of attendance.

A garment exhibition will showcase the creativity and skills developed during the training, while participants’ success stories will highlight the potential impact of skills development on their lives.

Kaas hopes that the newly acquired skills will encourage women to explore entrepreneurial opportunities, from making and altering garments to pursuing further training in fashion and textiles.

The partnership between NACWO, the Phyllis Nonhlanhla Skhosane Organisation and Vibe and Stitch also highlights the role of collaboration in bringing practical training opportunities to rural communities.
