Bowlers find the right bias

Newcastle Bowling Club hosted the much-anticipated Kings Day last Saturday, where teams from across Northern KwaZulu-Natal gathered on the greens to enjoy the popular event.

After three games, only three points separated the first five teams. Finishing in first place were Fritz and Marie Botha with Trevor Hutchinson (32 + 30), closely followed by Ron and Alice Howe (31 + 26), while third place went to Sid Price, Monty Steele and Michelle Steele (29 + 33).

The club’s drawn trips competition was played on Sunday, with a pleasing entry of 21 players received, and there was much excitement due to most games being decided on the last end. Tim Taylor, Malcolm Webster and Bert Rodgers won their first game to qualify for the semi-finals against Ernie Phillips, Trevor Hutchinson and Billy Viviers.

Douglas Steele, Gert Roos and Tony Reis won their first game and then edged out Fritz Botha, Shaun Rheeder and Trevor Vincent to qualify for the final against Tim’s team, who had earlier beaten Ernie’s team. Douglas and his team continued their good form to pip Tim’s team by one shot to take the title.

The ladies’ competition was not completed due to adverse weather conditions, and will now be finalised on November 9. In other news, the monthly FedAuto meat competition is this Saturday. A number of bowlers will also be travelling to Dundee this weekend for the annual Friedman Cup.

The FedAuto Business League has almost reached the halfway stage, and there remains much competition atop the logs.
Leading section 1 are the unbeaten Dozy’s Dudes (8 + 34), followed by Putt Putts (6 + 36). Section 2 is also led by an unbeaten team in The Hobo’s (8 + 39), followed by DaXa Has Beens (6 + 42).
