MMA fighters return from fight league
African Fight League 17 (AFL17) has proven to be an experience which has left two local MMA fighters even more determined to establish their worth in the cage.
Davy Chaung and Ryno Kern from Tiger/Crane MMA dojo embarked on their journey of self discovery on October 26 when they travelled to Pietermaritzburg where the African Fight League 17 (AFL17) was held.
Still relatively new to the MMA world, their début was not all roses and the two fighters lost their matches.
Davy explained that he found the experience somewhat overwhelming.
“But now I know what to expect. I need to focus more on training, especially on the boxing side.”
Despite losing, Davy said that his love for MMA had not wavered in the slightest and he is determined to compete again in AFL 18, which will take place in Empangeni next March.
According to Davy, MMA is not all about fighting.
“MMA is still in its baby stages in South Africa, but I would encourage others to get involved in it, as it is a good way to learn about self defence and improving one’s fitness levels.”
Davy explained that a person needed to be passionate about sport before signing up. “No matter if you win or lose, you must always respect your opponent.”
Head coach Frik Willemse expressed his pride in the two fighters. “I wasn’t able to accompany them, but I received feedback and Ryno and Davy have a lot of potential. I’m very proud of them; it takes balls to get into a cage match.”
