Pupils benefit from drug awareness course
SANCA educated 16 pupils on the dangers of drugs.
The South African National Council on Alcholism and Drug Dependence (SANCA) hosted a three month course to 16 pupils from Tugela High School.
The course, which was dubbed ‘Ke Moja’, and means ‘I’m fine’ in Zulu, saw representatives from SANCA discussing drugs and relevant choices. Lillian Gajoo from SANCA explained the programme was named ‘Ke Moja’ to show pupils they could be fine without drugs.
Going in-depth on what substance abuse was. the classification of drugs and the effects of dagga and all drugs had on the human body, was vital to equip the pupils to make the informed choice to refrain from using drugs.
“We also taught the pupils about conflict management and life skills, as a lot of the pupils will be finishing school this year and it is important that they are able to make the right choices,” said Mrs Gajoo.
Mrs Gajoo was positive that the course had the necessary impact on the pupils. “They were remarkable and very keen to learn more.” Mrs Gajoo said as drugs were a problem in schools, it was important for children to be exposed to drug awareness programmes.
“The biggest problem is dagga, as it is cheap. Mandrax is another problem drug.”
