After nearly eight years of promises, waiting and high expectations the tender of the construction of the new FET College in Dundee has been published by Majuba College’s head office in Newcastle.

The tender reads that the new technology campus will be built on portion 19 of erf 1503, Dundee – which is at the Mpati entrance to the town where an environmental impact report has long been completed.

Closing date for bid is November 29 with a compulsory site inspection on November 21.

The idea of a much-needed FET College for the town was first mooted through Dr Mike Lotter (retired education inspector) , Kevin Burge and Dave Durham(of Orange Grove) through the Umzinyathi Education Environmental Centre which Mr Burge managed and pioneered up until his retirement in June this year.

While an architect’s plans were shown to the local Council at least four years ago nothing has been heard of the much-vaunted plans.  When the environmental report was finally approved hopes rose but there was again gloom when after Majuba opened a satellite campus at the old Commando building, it was thought that this was all Dundee was going to get.

However, Majuba College have always been committed to opening a custom-built campus for the town.

While officials are disinclined to give details because of political considerations, it is thought that phase one of the new College will cost in the region of R60-million.
The town waits expectantly.
