Drawing from the heart

Sinethemba's passion for art started at Highland North Boys High School after he saw one of his classmates drawing a cartoon

Sinethemba Phakhti is a young man who creates magic every time he puts pen to paper.

This 21-year-old was born in Johannesburg and raised in Ladysmith, and prides himself on his artistic talent. Sinethemba’s passion for art started at Highland North Boys High School after he saw one of his classmates drawing a cartoon. It was like a switch was flipped inside him! He rapidly developed a taste for drawing and hasn’t stopped since.

Sinethemba mostly draws landscapes and people. “What I love the most is portraits,” he enthuses. Over the years, he has drawn over 50 portraits, including one of himself when he was in grade 8 at the age of 16. This one just happens to be his favourite as well.

The method Sinethemba works with is that he has a picture in front of him and he simply draws what he sees. He explains that an A4 drawing takes him about three hours to complete. Sinethemba loves to draw political leaders from the past who fought for change.

Once an artwork is complete, Sinethemba has it laminated and sells it to whoever is interested.

“Before, drawing was a hobby, but now it’s a talent!” With this philosophy in mind, Sinethemba has big plans for the future. He would like to get more drawings under his belt and hopes to makes it an occupation. He has already come up with a personal logo which he includes in all his drawings. “This is the trademark I have created for myself. I would also like to have my logo printed on shirts so I can make a name for myself,” says this artistic entrepreneur. With talent in store and an eye for branding his creations, he is sure to make big inroads into the artistic field!
